The Veteran IT Professional
Randeep R Pawar’s own journey in the IT industry has been eventful for the last 23 years. For more than a decade, he had the opportunity of working in the USA, UK, Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, and India. Some projects that he was a part of were virtualization, cyber security, cloud solution, DR (Disaster Recovery) and BCP (Business Continuity Plan), designing and building data centre infrastructure, endpoint securities, email solutions, among others.
As an IT professional, he has also worked as an IT consultant with companies such as UBS Investment Banking, McKesson Pharmaceutical, IBM India, Bombay Dyeing. Kokuyo Camlin, Gammon Infrastructure take consulation to improve their IT infra to name a few.
Five years ago, he along with his team decided to get into the backup solutions and disaster recovery space. Before that, they were in the business of selling backup solutions for Acronis. A few years down the line, Acronis went on to release the most promising DR Solution. They then began educating their customers and started with demonstrations for DR solutions. It quickly came to the light that DR is one of the biggest pain areas of the IT sector and for every business, data is one of the biggest business assets, which needs to be secured from day-to-day risks of cyberattacks.

Disaster Recovery Challenges
Earlier, when Tecstaq’s team would speak to customers about disaster recovery, they used to get answers like ‘we don’t need backup, we have a stable investment, we are taking our backup on local storage, external drive, or other server-drive-tape-drives’. The narrative used to be that yearly investment is not possible and that customers’ in-house IT team is capable of taking care of their business needs.
But the sentiment has changed in the last few years. With cyber and ransom attacks taking place frequently, not only have the servers got impacted but also the local storage and backups. The storage local backup copies are also becoming unrecoverable, which brought the importance of cloud-based DR and backup solutions to the forefront. Customers have now started understanding the risk of data and IT infrastructure security and stability.
According to Mr Pawar, convincing customers to understand the critical role of DR and backup solutions hasn’t been easy but the adoption has also been propelled by the compliance norms, which are part of the IT audit.
Overcoming the Biggest Challenge
The first few months of the pandemic made Tecstaq’s team put on their thinking caps. They had to ascertain which services to focus on and the next steps. The requirements from new and existing customers for complete infrastructure backup and DR solutions had also started to increase. So, the team decided to start their operations 100% from home, with all the required facilities.
In a few cases, the team needed to visit customer sites, owing to the nature of the business. For this, the firm provided private cab services, to ensure minimal exposure and avoid public transportation. ‘Star Health Corona Kavach Insurance Policy’ was also taken by the company, with a cover of Rs. 5 lakh for each employee. Mr Pawar feels that their people are their greatest strength and the firm wanted to make sure that it did the best for them.

As per Mr Pawar, to be an entrepreneur one has to be resilient and aware. Looking at the current cyber security issues and maintenance of business assets like business data and the IT infrastructure, there is a need for next-generation security measures. Mr Pawar also believes that currently, large, and mid-sized companies with multiple Datacentres, manages DR from one site to another. Keeping in mind the investment and support, most customers now want to migrate it to cloud-based DR solutions for either stability, reducing the business impact or IT audit requirements. So, he further advises that one must focus their attention on customers’ requirements.
