Gone are the days when it was thought that interior design was just a pompous expression for a certain sensitivity and good taste in decorating a space. In the world of art and design, the generation of ideas and fabrication of those ideas into objects for reflection and evaluation conceptualize creativity. Painters generate sketches as products of their creative process, exploring the possibilities of composition in the form of pencil drawings before a finalized painting. Architects explore many design possibilities through design sketching, hard-line drawings, physical models, and manufacturing artifacts for the exploration of diverse ideas.
A penchant for geometry, and a flair for innovation, marks the work of Studio Emergence, a fledgling design practice set up by Architects Seeja Sudhakaran and Khushbu Davda. Blending their love for parametric design with the increasingly popular concept of biomimicry, the two architects display a rather unusual approach to design. A portfolio pepped up with diverse design explorations, their work ranges from product design to Architectural high rises, Intriguing, to say the least, the creative outputs of the studio emerge as a rich, multi-layered palimpsest of design thoughts and philosophies.
Providing data-driven design solutions and integrating this computation based technology to the existing workflow are one of the strong suits where it strives to increase the overall efficiency of the project.
Persistent Leaders of the Organization
Two architects Seeja Sudhakaran and Khushbu Davda founded the Studio Emergence with a penchant for geometry in design and parametric process-based methodology. Most of their works are derived from nature and are biomimetic. The duo works on high rise residential building, hospitality interiors, and residential luxury projects. Their design methodology is very process- based and is driven by material exploration.
After working with some prestigious firms and having different design philosophies, they did graduation in Advanced design and digital Architecture(ADDA) from Elisava – Barcelona school of design and Engineering, which happens to be the oldest design school in Spain. The duo got exposed to a very different design process where materials and forms had to work together, and they had to be hands-on while building life-size prototypes.
“We were really inspired by this direct and very involved approach and wanted to work with the same methodology in India; thus STUDIO EMERGENCE started in 2015.”
Strength lies in Designing Strong and Unique Futuristic Forms
Be it interior of a space, a product or a building design, our design methodology remains the same and is dictated by moving towards the final product with a lot of integrity and questioning. It works with a lot of furniture design tailor-made for space. Each project is designed very specifically to the client’s lifestyle and their relationship with each area. The firm uses a lot of anthropometric data, how the client’s use each space throughout the day, site context, etc. as parameters for design. Digital fabrication techniques like using machining for fabrication and execution is one of the major strengths of the company.
“To create unique and beautiful products never to be repeated in other projects is something we try and work on regularly.’
Offering Turnkey Solutions
Focusing on quality services, most of the designs are tailor-made for the context and user. It also has furniture and lighting design vertical where it fabricates and customizes unique pieces for designers and architects for their projects. Most designers have a great design sense and try to include parametric furniture in their plans; the firm helps in executing that bit of the project and working in collaboration with architects and designers.
The company offers an overall design immersive experience to the end user. From the conceptual level to the execution, each stage is thought of, from the perspective of ease of understanding the designs and being involved in the process. For clients, it’s important to know what is in the designer’s mind; many times this communication is the key to having a successful and fruitful partnership. By the medium of computer renderings, virtual reality experiences and also prototyping, it ensures that the clients know the project well before plunging into the execution stage.
Being Sustainable
The organization has minimum material wastage on site since all the material is meticulously documented in a BIM model and use of digital fabrication also reduces the wastage in the design stage itself. It loves to explore the boundaries of architecture and design by collaborating with experts from various fields like lighting, artists, bio hacking experts, computer engineers, etc. The background in academics keeps us grounded to the shift that is happening regarding technological advancement in design.
Advising the Budding Designers
Interior design directly affects the user experience. Attention to detail and ergonomics should be of primary importancefor the younger ones. The duo believes that design is responsible in warping the user’s mood to an extent, the colors, the lighting, the seamless design experience will really elevate the mood. They further add that Interior design is a hands on profession, don’t be skeptical to learn carpentry or civil details from the karigars themselves, it really helps you design better.
Futuristic Approach
The organization is currently working on a couple of penthouse projects such as a duplex which is a dream sea facing house for a family of six. The design is unique to their experiences, travel stories, their functional relationships with the spaces they use. It has also created a family seating space which undulates to create a reading nook, couple’s seat, family entertainment zone, kid’s play area, all in one.
