The Story of Inception
Mr. Shyamsundar Munshi originally started as a glass bottle supplier. Over the years in this business, he realized that there was an extensive shortage in the number of factories that could supply glass bottles. This created limitations for the packaging industry to evolve as there was a monopoly of the established manufacturers. To overcome this monopoly and license raj obstructions, he got into backward integration. He collaborated with one of the world’s top technology providers and convinced them to impart this technology in the Indian market and thus providing new opportunities in the field of glass bottle manufacturing.
Challenges during Initial Days
The company faced many challenges in its initial days. First, it was the days of license raj and one needed to get a permit/license for every possible aspect. Being single-handed in setting up this operation he was stretched in all directions and had to ensure that all angles were covered. The most challenging feature was to find a suitable foreign technology provider who was willing to license his technology to a restrictive country like India. Mr. Munshi, the prestigious founder, had to convince them to invest money in Indian manufacturing operations. That was nearly 46 years ago when getting dollars was a challenge. He needed them to invest so that the entire technology hand- over process was executed in its entirety and that they stayed committed.
