Prime Minister Modi Inaugurated Country’s First Underwater Metro Route with other Projects Valued ₹15,400 crore

On Wednesday, March 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced and initiated the foundation for multiple projects totaling ₹15,400 crore in Kolkata as part of his 10-day tour across 12 states and union territories (UTs). This marks his second visit to West Bengal in just five days.

Some Projects Unveiled by PM in West Bengal are

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, marking India’s inaugural foray into underwater Metro services. As per an official statement, the 4.8-kilometer segment of the East-West Metro, constructed at a cost of ₹4,965 crore, will feature India’s deepest Metro station at Howrah, situated 30 meters below ground level. This corridor will facilitate connectivity to vital areas such as the IT hub Salt Lake Sector V.
  2. As per the Central Railways, although the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor is inaugurated today, passenger services will commence at a later date.
  3. During his visit to Kolkata, the Prime Minister also initiated additional train services aimed at improving urban mobility. These include the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and the Taratala-Majerhat Metro sections.
  4. Additionally, PM Modi dedicated to the nation the following projects: Pune Metro’s Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi stretch; Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension project (Phase IB) from SN Junction Metro station to Tripunithura Metro station; Agra Metro’s stretch from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar; and the Duhai-Modinagar (North) section of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor.
  5. In the afternoon, PM Modi is anticipated to deliver a public address at a rally in Barasat, located in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, where Sandeshkhali is situated.

PM Modi’s visit to West Bengal last week included addressing two rallies in Hooghly’s Arambagh and Nadia’s Krishnanagar. During these addresses, he criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government for “atrocities on women” in Sandeshkhali, stating that the “entire country is seething with anger over the issue”. He urged the people to ensure TMC’s defeat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

In addition, Modi met with Mamata Banerjee at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata, described by the chief minister as a “courtesy meeting” following protocol.
