Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr expressed optimism about the Indian market and announced plans to strengthen the airline group’s position by expanding operations and working closely with Air India. Speaking at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting, Spohr highlighted the group’s two-fold strategy for India. Firstly, Lufthansa aims to expand its own operations in the country by reopening the Frankfurt-Hyderabad route and introducing Munich-Bangalore flights. This move signifies the group’s confidence in the Indian market and its commitment to providing premium travel experiences to Indian travelers. Secondly, Lufthansa intends to deepen its collaboration with Air India, leveraging the airline’s new leadership and partnership with Tata and Singapore Airlines.

Lufthansa Group has been present in the Indian market for over 90 years and currently offers more than 50 weekly services connecting Frankfurt, Zurich, and Munich with various Indian cities. Spohr emphasized the potential of the Indian market, highlighting the strong demand from the Indian upper middle class for European travel experiences. He also mentioned that Lufthansa currently holds sufficient traffic rights, except for code share rights and connecting traffic.

The group’s decision to expand its operations and collaborate with Air India reflects its positive outlook on the post-Covid growth opportunities in the Indian aviation market. Lufthansa Group, comprising Network Airlines, Eurowings, and Aviation Services, aims to capitalize on India’s untapped potential and provide premium travel services for both business and leisure travelers. With its long-standing presence and strategic plans, Lufthansa Group aims to further strengthen its foothold in India and contribute to the growth of the aviation industry in the country.
