Kolkata-based shipbuilding company, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), has secured a contract to construct and deliver four multi-purpose vessels, each with a capacity of 7,500 DWT (Deadweight tonnage). This contract covers the design, construction, and delivery of these vessels, which are specifically designed to carry multiple large windmill blades on deck. Each vessel will be 120 meters long, 17 meters wide, with a maximum draft of 6.75 meters.
The contract, valued at approximately $54 million (around ₹448 crore), is expected to be completed within 33 months. Shares of GRSE have been on a strong bull run, with the stock rising over 100% in the last six months. The company boasts a robust order book of around ₹22,792 crore, with the government holding a 74.50% stake.
GRSE, one of India’s leading shipyards located in Kolkata, specializes in building and repairing commercial and naval vessels, and also exports its ships. Notably, GRSE was the first shipyard in independent India to build a warship for the Indian Navy, the Seaward Defence Boat (SDB) INS Ajay in 1961.
Additionally, it built the first-ever Indian export warship, “CGS Barracuda,” for the Government of Mauritius, delivered FPV “SCG PS Zoroaster” to the Government of Seychelles, and an ocean-going cargo and passenger ferry, “MV MA Lisha,” for the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. Recognized as a Miniratna Category I Company in 2006, GRSE has built over 785 platforms, including more than 100 warships for the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and the governments of Mauritius and Seychelles, the highest number of warships built and delivered by any Indian shipyard to date.
