A Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU) with the Government of Maharashtra was signed by China’s Great Wall Motors (GWM), which will inject $1 billion (about Rs 7,600 crores) to renovate a previous General Motors plant to build jobs for 3,000 people at the Pune automotive hub.
The firm thanked the state government and said the support could turn both parties into an excellent business opportunity. Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong and Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray attended the online conference.
“This would be a highly automated plant in Talegaon with advanced robotics technology integrated in many of the production processes,” Parker Shi, managing director of GWM India, said in a statement.
The Chinese automaker had earlier spent approximately Rs 1,000 crore this year in acquiring the GM factory on the outskirts of Pune.
Brand experts are saying that Chinese car companies are still facing the audience’s disapproval on social media, but the impact on the market is not that much. In addition, MG Motor, the British brand marketed by SAIC had an impressive response before the outbreak of coronavirus in India, with month-to-month sales in excess of 3,000 units.
