Renowned design studio, Zero Energy Design Lab which is based in Delhi, has recently completed the construction of a girls’ hostel building in Gurugram. The hostel is made with perforated concrete façade and has an exterior staircase.
The girls’ hostel block is a part of the St. Andrews Institute of Technology and Management. This block is quite similar in style to the adjacent boys’ hostel block and consists of the same material palate of concrete and brick. However, a diagonal staircase adds a new touch to the block.
The 25,000 sq. ft. building can house 130 students in various dorms across four levels. The exterior of this building has been constructed with hollow concrete blocks in a red-brick color. The design studio left the grey concrete structure exposed with the objective of creating a decorative contrast with the red blocks. The ‘tripod-like configuration’ in which the concrete columns are placed provide structural stability.
In order to suit the climate of Gurugram, where the temperature goes up to 40 degrees celsius, the studio used parametrical design tools to create a suitable facade.
The studio focused on low-carbon design, with the objective of keeping the building cool naturally.
