Women have always been exceptionally talented from the earlier days. Even the social taboo could not restrict them rising from the mud. We have seen their print embarked in all the fractions of the society where males had already positioned themselves at the top, whether its politics, business, science, arts, music or sports. Recent achievements in worldwide sports show the change. But still women in those sports have not been acknowledged as much.
There’s one more place where women have to mark their territory i.e Bollywood. Even though they have made their way on to the top into the industry, a female lead protagonist film was considered to be a failure. Despite that actresses have made it a challenge to procure their position on the top. To obtain this goal sportswomen have been the extraordinary muse to the female actors. Bollywood has been experimenting with the biopic of the sportswomen who are great inspirations to all the women in India.
For Instances, ‘Mary Kom’ aka ‘Magnificent Mary’ is an Indian Olympic boxer to be ranked as No. 1 AIBA World Women’s Ranking Light Flyweight category. She is said to be the first Indian woman boxer to acquire a Gold Medal in the Asian Games in 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games. Her achievements has inspired the industry to make a biopic on her. Our former Miss India and World ‘Priyanka Chopra’ to portray herself as Mary Kom in the movie “Mary Kom”. The movie was believed to be a commercial success, grossing ₹1.04 billion at the box office. Mary Kom is also ranked among the highest-grossing Indian films starring a female actor.
Another inspiring sportswoman is ‘Geeta Phogat’ a freestyle wrestler who won India’s first ever gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in 2010. She won gold medal in the qualification round for the Olympic Summer Games. The inspiring role is being played by ‘Fatima Sana Shaikh’ in the movie “Dangal”. The film introduced a struggling child actor, offering a platform to showcase her talent in the film industry. The movie is the highest grossing sports film worldwide and 5th in non-English. The movie is also said to be one of the 20 highest grossing films, breaking all records of commercial success.
The synergy between sports and Bollywood has provided a platform to highlight the accomplished sportswomen who needed a broad platform to be recognized in the domestic and worldwide nation. There are still some achievers in different sections of sports needed to be acknowledged by the countrymen and beyond. Bollywood has already gone through some of those projects to highlight the sportsperson and some are still in process. We would like to see those projects come through and create legends.
