Ice cream’s history and evolution of over twenty-two hundred years are fascinating. Going back as far as the second century BC, the undated origin of ice creams without any credible inventor tells us that one of the most favoured and flavoured frozen dairy desserts had been enjoyed by Alexander as snow and ice tickled nectar and honey and also satisfied the cravings of King Solomon’s taste buds as iced drinks.
However, ice cream as we know it today originated as frozen milk confectionery during the sixth and seventh centuries AD in the Chinese Tang dynasty (618-907 AD). A type of frozen milky dessert introduced to the Indian continent by the Mughals of Delhi in the 16th century was the precursor to the much-loved Indian dessert of Kulfi. Kulfi got its name from the cone-shaped metal containers used in Akbar, the Emperor’s royal kitchens.
Although enjoyed throughout the year, Kulfi had always been favoured by Indian connoisseurs during the annual spring festival. Symbolizing Kulfi’s connection with the season of Spring (called Basant in Hindi), Late Sr Lal Singh founded BASANT Kulfi in 1952 in the city of Ludhiana with a very small quantity and only in handmade form. He was supplying Kulfi on his hand cart in various schools. Later in 1965, he opened a rented shop at the field Gunj outside ‘Kucha no.5 to offer his Kulfi to all the dessert lovers.
In the early 1970’s Sr Lal Singh’s son Sr Rajinder Singh joined his father’s Kulfi Business and later made his innovations of Ice Creams, such as Fruit Ice Cream, Kulfi Gharey wali, Milk Badam, and many more. In a few years, they bought their shop, which became very popular and still very famous in the city area of Ludhiana.
In 1992 they expanded with a modern Ice Cream Parlor at Field Gunj, Kucha No.9. Sr Rajinder Singh’s sons Charanjit Singh and Kanwal Preet Singh joined their family business and expanded with a food joint. They added Chinese food to that outlet, generating a great response in Ludhiana. Later on, they expanded their business all over Ludhiana.
