Indian IT companies, including Wipro, have taken a strict note on moonlighting in India and have made it a strict protocol for its employees to refrain from taking up additional work assignments from other companies that may result in termination. A few weeks ago, Wipro’s Chairman, Rishad Premji, publicly expressed his anguish over the moonlighting practice as “plain and simple cheating.”
Moonlighting news is not a new thing in the industry. Also known as ‘Freelancing’ or ‘Expert Consultancy,’ it is a common factor among almost 30% of the employed professionals taking up additional work for extra side income.
From the organizational perspective, when an employee works in a single employment model, the employee can focus on the work in a better way, can learn more aspects of the business in detail and can actively contribute through his innovative ideas to the development of the organization. However, in the case of moonlighting scenario, the employee works mechanically on the core of an hourly basis as his focus, potential and energy is divided, giving the right justice to neither of the companies.
Many IT companies, including Wipro, Infosys and others, have taken up a cautious approach to observing the efficiency of the employees with respect to their results, interpersonal behaviour and adherence to the human resource regulations. This development predicts to bring a great upsurge and benefits the business community massively.
