The international non-profit Climate Group, in partnership with ResponsibleSteel, launched the ‘SteelZero’ initiative in India. This global initiative intends to bring leading organizations together to accelerate the transitions to a net zero steel industry.
SteelZero aims to bring together businesses in the steel industry to make a public commitment to buy and use 50 low-emission steel by 2030, thus establishing a pathway towards using 100 percent net zero by 2050. This came in as a formal statement from the Climate Group officials.
Mr Amitabh Kant, India’s Sherpa to G20, and Mr Sajjan Jindal, Chairman of JSW and World Steel Association, showed their presence at this launch event. Mr Kant believes, “The launch of SteelZero is only the beginning of a long, productive road ahead.”
After China, the maximum volume of steel is produced in India. It is expected that emissions from India’s steel industry to triple over in the next three decades, and India’s push to meet its net zero targets will depend significantly on the decarbonisation of its steel sector.
