Earlier, drones used to be similar to computers as they were large, costly, and almost difficult for the general consumer to fathom owning or using. Fortunately, drone technology has advanced a lot since then. Drones are now available in a variety of sizes and configurations, ranging from enormous enterprise-level machines aimed to improve farming and construction operations to small, entertaining consumer versions made for racing and photography.

Increasing labor efficiency and productivity, reducing workload and production costs, enhancing accuracy, refining service, and customer interactions, and resolving security challenges on a large scale are just a few of the many benefits drones provide companies throughout the world. Drone technology adoption across sectors jumped from the fad stage to the mega-trend stage pretty fast as more and more firms realized its potential, scope, and global reach. One company providing robust drone services is Birdview Mapping.

Ashwin Karunakaran, CEO of the company, is highly passionate and knowledgeable about drone technology. In an interview with Insights Success, Ashwin expresses his thoughts on drone technology. Below are the highlights of the interview.

Describe about Birdview Mapping in detail.

Drone technology has made a big impact in all industry right from the accurate survey, surveillance, and warehouse industry. There is a lot of new innovation in today’s world, and with big investments being made in this technology more and more advanced drones are being launched in the market globally.

Today, anyone can buy and fly a drone following a few rules with the help of Auto Pilot. It made a big difference in flying using the software. One of the newest uses for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is AI, and Geo Motion Technology makes a big impact on Spain’s travel and tourism.

SRM consulting from Madrid is working with local authorities of traffic monitoring using Geo Motion and Geo Maps solutions.

Birdview Mapping is an official reseller for the SRM software technology globally. Drone survey mapping holds several potentials for various sectors such as the construction of highways, railways, agriculture, mining, infrastructure inspection, and real estate.

Understanding the need of Drone Technology, “Ashwin Karunakaran, trained in Survey of India 2005, established Birdview Mapping in 2013 in Bengaluru – an expert in Aerial Triangulation, True Orthophoto production, Topo Base maps using Drones, DEM, and Contour extraction from stereo models,” says the team at Birview Mapping.

Ashwin Karunakaran, would you please brief us about yourself and shed some light on your professional tenure?

I got myself trained in 2005 from Survey of India, Hyderabad, and got certified in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and Cartography Mapping. Thus, I started my career working for the GENESYS Mumbai in 2007 and learned how the organization works for quality and does not comprise on quality data.

I learnt the job of production to quality control and handling teams and managing projects. Finally, in 2013, I was ready to start my survey company and registered Birdview Mapping under Indian Law.

What kind of offerings have you provided to your clients?

From 2014 onwards, we have been carrying out drone mapping back-end office of drone data processing and photogrammetry mapping for our client Malaysia Jurukur Perunding Services. Further, the first drone project was held in 2016 for the Kerala Thiruvananthapuram National Highway Road Project of IIDC under the guidance of Mr. Ramesh Krishnamoorthy, who was the coordinator between the client and Birdview Mapping to deliver the project successfully.

We provide a flexible approach and professional service to our clients. We give our clients the opportunity to build lasting and stable business relationships. Each new job is a challenge for us, and the realization of the projects gives us satisfaction. We believe in effective and quick execution of orders of our clients and provide the highest quality products and services at competitive prices. We have good experience in the following fields:

  • 2D data capturing
  • 3D data capturing
  • Data conversion
  • Aerial and Satellite image processing
  • UAV Mapping
  • BIM
  • Tunnel Mapping and 3D modelling using point cloud data

Where do you envision Birdview Mapping to be in the long run? What are your future goals? How do you plan to embrace the changes happening in your industry?

In spite of the Covid-19 impact on the world, we never stopped learning and showcasing drone technology to the world. We have been hosting online drone tech events for the last one year in Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai with Partnering with Reality Vision Consulting. Reality Vision Consulting is hosting Qatar’s Physical Drone Tech Event, which will be held on December 13 and 14, 2021.

We have also signed NDA with aOrion Poland for selling Heli-E globally. The drone Heli-E entered the market in Q3 2020. Here are the highlights of the commercial cases that have been proofs of its product-market fit, which can cover up to 60 km:

Case 1. Ice exploration, July-September 2020, the Arctic Ocean

The task: The drone helped in providing security for offshore platforms: it detected potentially dangerous icebergs and marked ice floes to prevent collisions.

The result: No-failure operation of two Heli-E UAS that carried out 35+ successful missions.

Concluding, we were in the medium pace of generating revenue with international projects, but drones have been in the Indian market. We are making a quick and good profit, hope to see more end-users of UAV/Drone technology and solutions.
