There was a time when the word scooter in India was synonymous with the iconic Bajaj Chetak. For the millennial population and the 80s kids, the brand evokes nostalgia. Now, thirteen years since the company last made the most loved scooter, it is back. Revamped and redesigned as an Electric scooter, the Pune-based automaker, Bajaj, has revived the brand and is looking forward to starting the sale of the electric Chetak by early 2020.
Though details are still awaited about the price and other specifications, Chetak is already making a splash on social and print media. With teasers dropping in and an impressively designed product page, the makers are creating a positive hype around the brand’s comeback.
From what is known, the Chetak will be positioned as a premium product. Extra attention has been paid to add features like ‘feather touch’ switchgear, full-LED lighting, and digital console, etc. Reports suggest that the Chetak will use a 4kW electric motor and an IP67-rated lithium-ion battery pack that’s not removable. The e-scooter will also have two riding modes – Eco and Sport – and it will have a reverse assist feature as well.
According to the company, the pricing, which has not been disclosed yet, will be an attractive aspect. The company will leverage its existing network to retail the Chetak e-scooter. The plan is to launch it in a phased manner – it will first be available in Pune sometime in January 2020, and then in Bengaluru shortly after. Plans to launch in other cities will be made as per market response.
