Recently published Central Electricity Authority (planning wing of power ministry) data has brought great news for the renewable energy sector. According to this report, in the month of June 2017, India has recorded highest ever electricity generation from renewable sources till date.
According to CEA data, India has produced 10.2 Billion Units of electricity in the month of June this year. This electricity got generated from solar, wind, biomass and small-hydro energy sources. This whole energy generation is 26% more than the previous year for the same month. Last year in the same period 8.1 Billion Units of electricity got generated. Interestingly, power generation in the first three months of the current year saw a quantum jump of 27% to 25.39 Billion Units as compared to the same period last year. “This could be the highest monthly renewable generation as substantial renewable generation capacity has been added towards March 2017 in solar,” said Salil Garg, Director at India Ratings.
India’s solar power installed capacity has increased by 300% to 13,652 Megawatt in the last two years. According to Salil Garg, higher solar radiation, a good monsoon, and higher wind speed lead to higher power generation from June to August this year.
Solar power generation has seen the exponential growth of 95% to 1,797 Million Units in June this year as compared to the same period last year. Similarly, Wind power generation in the month of June has increased by 24 percent to 7,229 Million Units.
The central government has been promoting renewable energy for the last few decades. Fluctuating prices of crude oil, depleting fossil fuels, higher carbon emission prompting the Government to move towards renewable energy. The central government wants to set up 175 Gigawatt of renewable power capacity by the end of 2022. This includes 100 GW from solar, 10 GW from biomass, 5 GW from small hydro and 60 GW from the wind.
