To err is human, impeccability is automated

From peering into space to poking around the genome, we have made spectacular leaps in the field of technology. With the technology that we have at hand it is unimaginable what the future holds for us. As of yet, we are just scratching the surface. A simple thing like leaving your phone at home can incur a crippling effect and it is rightly so as in the foreseeable future, a simple phone can unravel complexities abound.
Once a concept purely of the minds of fiction writers is now morphing into reality. Hitherto a ridiculed idea, Artificial Intelligence is today a vital constituent of daily life. Walk into a space to see it set exactly how you envisioned it, that’s AI working for you. AI is the intelligence demonstrated by machines. Designed to observe behavioral traits, these machines attempt to predict your every move based on prior activity. It mimics cognitive function that was once the sole dominion of human species. Still in its infancy, AI has thronged the workspace, making it an indispensible element.
Lately, we saw social media giants like Facebook and Instagram adopting the live broadcasting feature on their sites. While it failed to yield a favorable response, its founders did have an ulterior motive to it. They’ve spent years immersed in AI technology and finally turned it around for a noble cause: to make bleak the possibility of suicide. AI offers to identify suicide-prone people, creating opportunities to intervene long before thoughts turn to action. According to a study, machine learning technology has an 80-90% chance of predicting suicidal people. AI technology has so far manifested itself in weather forecasts, Google’s search predictions, and voice recognition, like Apple’s Siri. Even e-tailers make use of this technology to augment their sales by providing us with suggestions purely based on our previously viewed items. Autocorrect which we rely so heavily on employs the same technology. It senses our inklings and turns them into reality. There is so much potential for this technology that the future is becoming seemingly difficult to imagine without it.
For a person oblivious of current trends and affairs, IoT may seem like a concept that has recently surfaced to lay siege to you attention. However, this is far from true; IoT has been lurking amongst IT professionals and early adopters. The coinage and pioneering of this term can be accredited to Kevin Ashton. As early as 1997, he envisaged the embedding of sensors that would wireless connect to feed the internet with information.IoT is the usage of embedded technology to remotely communicate with one another and the central system, feeding data which will result in improved expertise, exactness be a benefit to humankind but with minimal human intervention. These objects could be animate or inanimate, generally referred to as smart devices that would exchange data through smart grids, power plants, making the world a more livable place. IoT is yet to percolate into every aspect of our lives for the sake of simplifying or oversimplifying it. We have still to fully and aptly comprehend this mindboggling technology.
IoT will go beyond mobile phones and laptops to find application in your home. The 1999 movie, Smart House, encompasses what IoT holds for us. Smart Homes have been predicted to be as revolutionary as smart phones, giving you the freedom to switch your lights on or off even if you’re in another hemisphere. With a population outburst, the demand for food will also increase. Sensing for soil moisture and nutrients, controlling water usage for plant growth and determining custom fertilizer are some simple uses of IoT.
India is not alien to the Everything on Demand technology. The On-demand technology is the economic activity created by technology companies that provides immediate goods and services. Companies in this sector are growing at an accelerating pace as consumer’s behavior are changing in response to swift messaging and accessibility to online stores, emails and transportation. It has vested in the minds of people the entitlement to fast, quick services and the internet makes consumer’s demands more attainable. It is convenient to shop online due to speed and cognitive easiness. Almost all needs are answered through these on-demand apps – a ride home from a not-so-hot date or for when your dog walker doesn’t show up.
So while technology helps you pick a pizza topping or modify crops to create a hybrid species or even change the way in which a society functions, there looms a dark side to this technology. Just as the Industrial Revolution had drastic effects on the centauries to come, so does this newly developed technology. We are so dependent on technology that we are left defenseless in the light of it falling in the hands of miscreants. The fear of this is often mirrored in the underlying theme in literature and movies alike. So as we lean on technology to make easy our lives, it is crucial to strike a balance between using it for our efficiency and being utterly vulnerable to it.
